Graduate Mentoring Program

One of the unique aspects of Steward is our two-component mentoring program for astronomy graduate students, consisting of grad-grad mentoring and grad-postdoc mentoring. For grad-grad mentoring, we assign 1st and 2nd year students with older graduate student mentors to provide younger students with an immediate resource, and to help them make the transition to graduate school. For grad-postdoc mentoring, we assign older graduate students to willing postdoc mentors to provide them with an advocate and supporter to help them launch into the next stage of their careers. In all cases, we optimize the pairs based on personality and research interests. Currently, over half of our students have opted to participate in this program. Since the department is relatively large, we have found that the mentoring program increases overall interaction in the department and forms friendships that may otherwise not have happened.
